A residency followed by an exhibition

The structure of a Residency followed by an exhibition creates an expectation
of a presence during the residency, in order to produce work for the
exhibition. From this point, the project responded by focusing attention
on this inhabitation of the space and the division between residency
and exhibition.
A constructed wall unnecessarily split the space into two defined areas,
one as the ‘exhibition space’ and the other as ‘residency
space’; a division that physically mirrored the temporal divide
between the two stages of the project. Reiterating and continually shifting
this division by physically moving the wall and encroaching upon these
respective spaces, whilst also allowing access to varying amounts of
the space across the project period.
By inhabiting these spaces on a daily basis, work was produced in the
back and forth movement between the two. These movements and their results
were documented and analysed to determine further movements, whereby
previously undetermined behaviourin turn became affected and forced.
With each movement video self-documentation was used to record this
taking place, in addition drawn and written documents detailed decisions
and results; producing an accumulation of material that pointed to aspects
of past behaviour, or behaviour yet to be enacted.
The work developed a relation to site-specificity that goes beyond physical
attributes, developing a psychological site-specificity that explores
behaviour in relation to a site and how this can be seen to go too far.
Throughout the residency period a daily blog
served as a further document, detailing daily behaviour at the space
and offering a removed perspective on this inhabitation.
