Nottingham Studios is an artist led
group comprising Michael Forbes, Mik Godley, Niki Russell, Dave Thomas
and Simon Withers, that was originally established as a consortium in
2003 and is now incorporated as a company limited by guarantee. The
group developed in response to need and demand for the provision of
new, high quality and affordable studio space. The aspiration is to
establish a permanent and secure artist-led studio facility to support
contemporary visual artists. It will incorporate individual and shared
studio units, alongside space for live art events, exhibitions, workshops
and education projects. Opportunities for public engagement are at the
heart of the project, to ensure that the space remains ‘live’
rather than a closed shop. This will be achieved through a rolling programme
of exhibitions, events and workshops. .
Since 2003 the group have worked with ArtReach
Consultants. In 2004 a successful application was made to the Small
Business Service and Arts
Council England for funding to support a detailed Feasibility Study.
In 2005 a further award from Arts Council England facilitated a detailed
Site Options Study and the development of a detailed Design Brief, and
appointment of an architectural practice to develop an outline design
concept to RIBA Stage B/C. Adjaye
Associates was appointed in autumn 2005 to undertake the design
exercise with a team led by award winning architect David Adjaye. Unfortunately
difficulties with the site meant that the project was unable to be progressed.
Nottingham Studios continues to pursue the realisation of this capital
development.
